    Cao-bang tea (scientific name: Ilex kudingcha) is a popular drink in Vietnam. It is also known as “Kuding tea” in China and “Tarayo” in Japan. It is particularly famous in China as a popular bitter healthy tea that was presented to the imperial court more than 2000 years ago.

    Rich in triterpenoids
    such as ursolic acid

    It has been reported that cao-bang tea is a rich source of various triterpenoids such as ursolic acid and oleanolic acid. In particular, ursolic acid is known to suppress inflammation and inhibit the accumulation of cholesterol on the walls of blood vessels that can lead to arteriosclerosis.

In this study, cao-bang tea extract powder was administered to ApoE-deficient mice (arteriosclerosis onset model), and they evaluated the occurrence of aneurysms and the area of the arteriosclerosis lesion sites. The study confirmed that the administration of cao-bang tea extract powder significantly reduced the occurrence of aneurysms and suppressed lesions in the aortic arch. It was also found that there was a strong correlation between the concentration and the area of the arteriosclerosis lesion sites. Therefore, the consumption of cao-bang tea is thought to reduce the risk of arteriosclerosis.
